Yoga for Adults with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities -Enhancing Choice for People in Institutionalized Settings -Autonomy Support.

Course description: Learn revolutionary & evidence based approaches for a population that are often “told” what to do. Learn the unique yoga teaching style specific to helping adults with disabilities. For many yoga teachers used to “telling” a class what to do, the autonomy approach feels very “counterintuitive” to a traditional yoga class. In this webinar, we explore ways to embed choice within the teaching style.

Join researcher Marieke Van Puymbroeck, Roy Distinguished Professor of Health Innovation Research and coordinator of the Recreational Therapy program at Clemson University to develop the skills needed for many institutionalized healthcare settings.

After you take this course: Participants will be able to identify three autonomy supportive evidence based approaches to use with yoga for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Yoga teachers can then help older adults in long term care facilities, group homes, recreational settings, prisons, psychiatric settings, basically all adults in institutionalized settings. Outreach possibilities are endless; service oriented yoga teachers will walk away with renewed enthusiasm for supporting specialty populations!

Presenter’s Bio: Marieke Van Puymbroeck is a Roy Distinguished Professor of Health Innovation Research and coordinator of the Recreational Therapy program at Clemson University. She has served two years as president of the National Academy of Recreational Therapists. Dr. Van Puymbroeck serves as the President of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. Marieke’s research focuses on yoga as a therapeutic intervention for individuals with chronic disease and disability, including individuals with chronic stroke, breast cancer survivors, individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, individuals with chronic pain, and older adults with a fear of falling. She is currently working on a project to infuse fall prevention into Oconee Memorial Hospital, as well as a NIH-funded study on the use of yoga for individuals with chronic pain and their caregivers.
